Nora van Esch
Swimming gives Nora a rhythm of repetition and breath; restoring old books asks for slower hands. As a teenager, she nearly ruined the first book she tried to repair. The mistake became the beginning of a patient practice with old paper, bindings and the knowledge that care starts by looking honestly at what is already there.

Patience learned twice
In the pool, Nora values the clean feedback of breath, stroke and distance. Improvement comes from repetition, but only when repetition remains attentive. A rushed length teaches less than one completed with a stable rhythm.
Book restoration offers less forgiving material. As a teenager, Nora almost destroyed the first old volume she tried to save. Instead of ending the interest, that failure taught her to respect paper, adhesives, bindings and the irreversible consequences of a well-meant shortcut.

Gothic architecture draws Nora through structure as much as atmosphere: height held by repeated ribs, stone opened by tracery and light made more vivid by the depth around it. She likes spaces that do not apologise for mystery.
That preference continues into dark academic interiors and nineteenth-century objects, especially books and pieces that still show age in their surfaces. Restoration, for Nora, should protect use and meaning without erasing every shadow that proves an object has lived.
