From seven guides to three hundred and twenty
When the Guides section opened it answered seven questions: how to buy well, how to read condition, how to measure for delivery, how to choose dining chairs, how to measure a table, how to inspect vintage lighting, and the practical difference between a chest, a cabinet and a sideboard.
The section now holds 320 guides. They are grouped so that a question leads to its neighbours instead of dead-ending: measuring, condition, materials, repairs, delivery, styles and the specific kinds of furniture people search for most.
Written for the moment before you decide
Each guide is short enough to read with a listing open in another tab and specific enough to change what you look at next. What to measure before a wall system can go up. Whether a woven seat can be repaired and what that costs. How to tell honest wear from active damage.
The aim is never to make old furniture look new. It is to let someone understand what age has done to a particular piece before it arrives in their hallway.
A calmer way to buy something old
Vintage buying goes wrong in predictable ways: a cabinet that will not turn on the stairs, a set of chairs where only one was photographed, a beautiful lamp with a cable nobody looked at. Almost all of it is avoidable with one good question asked early.
PatinaHall exists so that distinctive furniture is easier to find and easier to understand. The Guides are the part of that work you can use before you spend anything.
